Coace® KS-05 is a random styrene-acrylonitrile-glycidyl methacrylate terpolymer.
The random styrene-acrylonitrile-glycidyl methacrylate (SAN-GMA) terpolymer is an excellent compatibilizer for the PLA/PBAT alloy. The terpolymer structure's unusual combination of functional groups allows it to develop strong contacts with both the PLA and PBAT phases, facilitating compatibility and improving the performance of the resultant alloy.
The SAN-GMA terpolymer's efficacy as a compatibilizer is based on its capacity to form strong interfacial adhesion between the PLA and PBAT phases. The glycidyl methacrylate (GMA) groups in the terpolymer can establish covalent connections with the hydroxyl groups in the PLA, whilst the styrene and acrylonitrile (SAN) segments can interact with the PBAT phase. This multifunctional compatibility mechanism creates a robust and stable interface, allowing for effective stress transmission and better overall performance of the PLA/PBAT alloy.
